Ecolab Case Study: Steel Manufacturers Saving Water

Swedish Pulp and Paper Mill Wrings Out Water and Generates Savings (2017)

This case study demonstrates how Ecolab helped a Swedish pulp and paper mill improve their sludge handling and dewatering operations.

Primary Functions

  • In this case study, Ecolab investigated new methods for improving a Swedish pulp and paper mill’s sludge handling and dewatering operations. By improving these processes, the mill saved 10.6 million gallons of water, 135 kWh of energy per centrifuge, and $228,000 of operation and maintenance costs per year.

Detailed Description

In this case study, Ecolab investigated new methods for improving a Swedish pulp and paper mill’s sludge handling and dewatering operations.

After a series of trials, Ecolab introduced FLOCMASTER™ Technology to the fiber dewatering lines and wasted biological sludge dewatering centrifuges. This solution increased the quality of sludge for use as biofuel. FLOCMASTER Technology exceeded customer expectations, optimizing overall chemical use, as well as allowing the mill to shut down one centrifuge.

Overall, the FLOCMASTER technology helped the pulp and paper mill save:

  • 10.6 million gallons of water per year
  • 135 kWh of energy per centrifuge
  • $228,000 in annual material and operations savings
