UN Secretary-General Highlights CEO Water Mandate to UN General Assembly

(18 February 2014, New York) — UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today called on world governments and the international community to work together to secure water, sanitation and sustainable energy for all as part of the broad Post-2015 Sustainable Development Agenda.

Speaking to UN Member States at a special thematic dialogue on “Water, Sanitation, and Sustainable Energy” convened by the President of the General Assembly, the UN Secretary-General said: “2015 is the deadline for Member States to define a Post-2015 Development Agenda and a concise, compelling set of sustainable development goals. The United Nations system  is supporting you in this endeavour”.

In relation to the global water challenge, the UN Secretary-General stated: “We must improve water quality and the management of water resources and wastewater. This is a matter of justice and opportunity. That is why we launched the CEO Water Mandate in 2007 to engage the international business community in water and sanitation”.

The UN Global Compact’s CEO Water Mandate has been actively contributing to the Post-2015 discussion and process. In addition to convening special consultations and meetings, the CEO Water Mandate has provided direct inputs — including the recently published UN Global Compact Issue Brief on water and sanitation, which includes proposed goals and targets.
