The section outlines the practical and administrative steps that make up a typical corporate water management cycle and then offers an overview of how the long-term maturity and evolution of a company\u2019s water management practices relate to its water disclosure efforts.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column]<div class=\"thim-widget-heading\"><div class=\"sc_heading   \"><h3 class=\"title\">The Business Case for Corporate Water Disclosure<\/h3><span class=\"line\"><\/span><\/div><\/div>[vc_column_text]<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many companies have found that the disclosure process itself improves their internal understanding of water-related challenges and contributes to the development of effective response strategies. For those companies that have taken significant steps to manage their water-related risks and negative impacts, disclosure provides an opportunity to demonstrate progress and good practice to both internal and external <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stakeholders<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This in turn helps companies strengthen their brand value and reputation, bolsters talent recruitment, and fosters increased investor confidence. Corporate water disclosure also offers a vehicle to establish a dialogue between companies and their stakeholders.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Showcasing progress and articulating future targets and commitments via disclosure (while allowing stakeholders to provide feedback on these aspects) strengthens corporate accountability and builds credibility <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with employees, local communities, civil society, and governments. Disclosure can also help companies hold other stakeholders accountable on water issues.\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column]<div class=\"thim-widget-heading\"><div class=\"sc_heading   \"><h3 class=\"title\">How Disclosure Fits into Corporate Water Management<\/h3><span class=\"line\"><\/span><\/div><\/div>[vc_column_text]<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A typical corporate water management cycle features a series of practical steps that a company uses to understand its relationship with water, undertake response strategies, and eventually communicate both to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stakeholders<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Understanding each step and the type of information generated through this process allows for more effective reporting. This section describes how a typical corporate water management cycle aligns with the Disclosure Framework presented in these Guidelines.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though corporate water management processes vary from company to company, they can be generalized as being iterative and having the following fundamental steps. The process depicted below as an illustrative example is derived from the<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.unglobalcompact.org\/docs\/news_events\/9.1_news_archives\/2010_06_17\/UN_Global_Compact_Management_Model.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> UN Global Compact Management Model<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and adapted for water-related management.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Commit<\/strong> &#8211; <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Commit to drive sustainable water management.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Account<\/strong> &#8211; <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Collect data on internal water performance and the condition of the basins in which the company operates.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Assess<\/strong> &#8211; <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use the data generated in the Account phase to identify water-related business risks and opportunities and negative impacts.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Define<\/strong> &#8211; <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Define and refine corporate water policy, strategies, and performance targets that drive performance improvements and address risks and negative impacts.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Implement<\/strong> &#8211; <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Implement water strategies and policies throughout the company and across the company\u2019s value chain.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"6\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Monitor<\/strong> &#8211; <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Monitor progress and changes in performance and basin conditions.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"7\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Communicate<\/strong> &#8211; <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Communicate progress and strategies and engage with stakeholders for continuous improvement by means of corporate water disclosure. Those with advanced water management programs might address a wider array <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of water-related issues such as a comprehensive corporate water strategy, value chain management, and engagement in sustainable water management activities outside the company fenceline.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Corporate water management can generally be categorized into the following types of activities:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Provide WASH services in the workplace<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Measure and monitor water management practices <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drive operational efficiency and reduce pollution<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Identify and understand water-stressed and high-risk <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">basins<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Integrate water management into business strategy\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leverage improved practices throughout the value chain <\/span><\/li>\n<li>Advance sustainable water management and engage in collective action<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column]<div class=\"thim-widget-heading\"><div class=\"sc_heading   \"><h3 class=\"title\">How Disclosure Fits with Corporate Water Management Maturity<\/h3><span class=\"line\"><\/span><\/div><\/div>[vc_column_text]<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The maturity of a company\u2019s water management practice is directly related to the maturity and comprehensiveness of its <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">corporate water disclosure<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. As the company expands its water management activities <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to address a wider range of risks and impacts, the scope of its disclosure practice expands as well.
